Retainer Instructions

  • Except the doctor instructs otherwise, make sure you wear your retainer all the time.
  • Always remove your retainer and put it in its case when eating (most appliances are misplaced in school restaurants or lunchrooms).
  • Use toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the retainer thoroughly once daily, using warm water. This helps to remove plague and eliminates odors. You can use other Efferdent® or other orthodontic device cleaners but they should not replace brushing.
  • When you are not wearing your retainer, it should always remain in its case.
  • Initially, speaking may be a problem. You can get over this faster by practicing singing, reading and speaking out loud.
  • Retainers can break, so handle them carefully. If you lose or break your retainer, get in touch with us right away.
  • For questions about your retainer, or you think it needs to be adjusted, call us. Avoid trying to adjust it yourself.
  • Always come with your retainer to every appointment.
  • Placing a retainer can be expensive, but with the right care they can last many years!
  • Take off your retainer if you want to swim.
  • Make sure your retainer does not come in contact with hot car dashboards, hot water, napkins, pockets, and the washing machine.
